Freeport is best known as the home of the outdoor clothier L.L. Bean, open 24/7. And the village of Freeport is indeed a shopper’s paradise, with over 200 name brand retailers and outlets. But there is so much more to this Maine coastal town and the nearby Maine Coast and popular Portland Maine area just 12 miles to our south!
Freeport is rich with history, it was founded in 1789 and is known as “the birthplace of Maine” since colonist met at the local Jameson Tavern to plot their separation from Massachusetts.
Freeport and the surrounding area deserves at least a few days stay to explore all that this seacoast village offers, from colonial homes, to a 19th century salt water farm, the oceanfront Wolfe’s Neck State Park, Winslow Park with a beach overlooking Casco Bay, and the Desert of Maine – a most unusual natural phenomenon.
A visit to Freeport must include a fresh steamed lobster enjoyed while overlooking the working fishermen’s harbor in South Freeport. Or perhaps you want to get out on the ocean in a kayak, explore the tidal river teeming with wildlife, or hop aboard a scenic ocean cruise or a sailboat charter. Freeport is also home to summer concerts and festivals throughout the year.
